Durham is one of eleven judicial districts in North Carolina offering Family Court as one of its core functions of the judicial system. Family Court helps families who have "Domestic Court" issues like divorce or custody, and families who have a child involved in "Juvenile Court" with issues like children who have been charged with a crime or children who have been removed from their families because of allegations of abuse, neglect or dependence.
Thanks to the members of the North Carolina General Assembly, Family Courts in North Carolina are developing and implementing user-friendly court services for families to help them work through their legal issues. We are dedicated to families in our community because we believe functional families are the cornerstones in any successful community.
There are currently eleven Family Court sites: District 14 (Durham County), District 20A (Anson, Richmond, and Stanly Counties), District 20B (Union County), District 26 (Mecklenburg County), District 12 (Cumberland County, District 6A (Halifax County), District 5 (New Hanover and Pender Counties), District 8 (Wayne, Lenoir and Greene Counties), District 25 (Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties), District 28 (Buncombe County), and District 10 (Wake County). Thanks to funding from the members of the North Carolina General Assembly in the 2007-2009 state budget, two additional districts have been funded, and we will soon welcome District 3A (Pitt County), and District 19B (Randolph County) to the Family Court Family.
The mission of our Family Court is to provide a less adversarial forum for the fair, just, and prompt resolution of family disputes. The Family Court will utilize the least intrusive intervention necessary, provide individualized response by linking families with appropriate community resources, and offer a full complement of alternative dispute resolution options. We pledge to treat all with courtesy, professionalism, and respect.
