Frequently Asked Questions

  1. How can I become a state court interpreter?
  2. How can I obtain my state certification for court interpretation?
Q.How can I become a state court interpreter?
A.If you are interested in working in the North Carolina courts as a foreign language interpreter, please see our state guidelines web site link and contact your local court officials. There are no state employee positions. Interpreters are appointed on as-needed basis. Also, you will need to work toward your state certification, as this will likely be a requirement in the future. (Last updated on  09/07/2001 )

Q.How can I obtain my state certification for court interpretation?
A.It is the goal of the Administrative Office of the Courts to provide certified, skilled, professional interpreters to work in our court system. Simply being bilingual is not enough. The AOC began testing Spanish interpreters for a new state certification exam in 2000. The test candidates have already been selected for 2001, but the exam will be given again to anyone interested in taking it in 2004. Test dates and information will be announced in 2004. Please check this web site. If you are interested in preparing for the state exam or taking it in another state, please see the National Center for State Courts' web site. (Last updated on  03/26/2008 )
