Warning: Residents Beware of Jury Duty Scam

News imageDurham County court officials have been informed that Durham County residents were recently targeted in a scam involving jury duty.

A caller informed the resident that a bench warrant had been issued because they had failed to report for jury duty. The caller then instructed the resident to make a payment by telephone in order to satisfy the bench warrant.

The resident was suspicious of the call, and rather than provide any information, contacted the Jury Office to follow up.

Court staff and the Sheriff's Office will NEVER contact citizens by phone or email and ask for Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, money, or any other sensitive personal or financial information. Do not give out such information over the phone or by email. The public is encouraged to report any such calls or emails received to the Durham County Sheriff's Office at 919-560-0889.

If you have been a victim of this or a similar scam and have shared your Social Security number, you may also want to report it to the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271 and all three major credit bureaus.
