| | | Wake County Clerk of Superior Court Lorrin Freeman receives first-ever award | | | RALEIGH – Wake County Clerk of Superior Court Lorrin Freeman was presented with the 2008-2009 President’s Award by the N.C. Conference of Superior Court Clerks at their recent educational conference. The award was established for the purpose of recognizing a clerk who has given of themselves unselfishly to the Conference of Clerks of Superior Court.
“The new Conference logo says ‘Serving Clerks, Unifying Efforts, and Improving Justice,” said Becky Spragins, clerk of Halifax County and president of the Conference of Clerks of Superior Court, during her presentation of this prestigious award. “Clerk Freeman has done all those things and has done so with compassion, thoughtfulness, understanding, respect and integrity. She sacrificed time in her office during the legislative session and spent many a late night at the legislature making sure that the Clerks of Superior Court of North Carolina were represented.”
“Lorrin Freeman worked tirelessly on behalf of Clerks of Superior Court during this past legislative session as the chair of the Conference’s Legislative Committee,” said John Smith, director of the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts. “As with other state government entities, the court system of which the Clerks of Superior Court are a part, faced unprecedented potential cuts to its operating budget, making her work more challenging than ever.”
During the past fiscal year, more three million cases were filed in the courts of North Carolina. Each case originated within the court system through one of the 100 clerks’ offices. During this same time period, clerks of Superior Court collected more than $700 million in court costs, fines, restitution and other monies as ordered by the courts. Under state law, clerks of Superior Court have judicial decision-making authority in a variety of cases, including foreclosures, guardianships, adoptions, and cases involving wills and estates.
“The clerks of court are a core part of the judicial branch,” said N.C. Conference of Clerks Executive Director Barbara Moore. “Without clerks we simply could not have court. Not only has Lorrin Freeman served Wake County since 2006, but as this award indicates, she has persevered on behalf of clerks as well.”
