They each receive an equal share of assistance from the Raleigh office, but when the headquarters staff found out that one chapter needed a little extra help, staff at the Judicial Center piled on!
Friends of Guardian ad Litem, a non-profit assistance group in Wake County, each year tries to make sure that kids do not return to school in September without school supplies. National statistics show that it can cost the average family almost $1,000 for school fees and supplies to get a child going in the new grade each year. Some families simply do not have it.
When the State Headquarters learned that the local “Back to School with Pride” project was short on supplies for about 200 kids, the staff went into high gear. Collection boxes were placed around Judicial Center, Raleigh. Emails were sent out and bulletins posted. Pencils, pens, paper, backpacks and even cash began coming in and in less than two weeks more than 25 packs for students were filled.
“The Friends of the Guardian Ad Litem are committed to making a difference to the hundreds of kids in our community that need just a little starting help,” said Babs Wagner, Volunteer President Friends of Guardian ad Litem of Wake County. “Most people have no idea of what a small effort like school supplies can make in the life of a struggling child. Thank you for your interest in our Back to School with Pride Project.”
About N.C. Guardian ad Litem
In 1983, the General Assembly established the Office of Guardian ad Litem (GAL) Services in the N.C. Administrative Office of the Courts. GAL’s mission is to provide trained, independent advocates to represent and promote the best interests of abused, neglected and dependent children in the state court system and to work expediently toward a plan that ensures that these children are in a safe, permanent home.
