N.C. medical community looks at illegal drugs

News imageNorth Carolina is beginning to look at its drug problem more closely and to study it from every angle. How do we treat drug users in courts, prisons and even within the medical world?

The Institute of Medicine was engaged by the Legislature to study substance abuse treatment needs in the state. Their report was presented to the General Assembly in mid-January. That report urged, among other changes, expansion of drug treatment courts within existing districts and across the state.

The N.C. Journal of Medicine, the publication associated with the N.C. Institute of Medicine, dedicated their January/February 2009 publication to the discussion of substance abuse in the state. Some of the subjects covered by the publication are drug treatment needs for recently returned veterans, substance abuse treatment by the Department of Corrections and how drug abusers are dealt with within the court system. Kirstin Frescoln, manager of the N.C. Judicial Department's Drug Treatment Court, was asked to provide a brief article for the magazine. In her article, Kirstin explains the difference between regular courts and drug treatment courts and the need for them.

The title of the magazine for the start of 2009 is "The Face of Addiction and the Pathways to Recovery."
