Court of Appeals building ready for new facelift

News image[Raleigh] – The Court of Appeals Building, located on the south side of Morgan Street between Salisbury Street and Fayetteville Street Mall facing the Capitol, has seen the scenes change since first dedication ceremonies were held Feb. 1, 1914. The Supreme Court, with its law library, moved in at that time and stayed for 26 years until getting another new building next door in July of 1940.

Through the years, 94 to be exact, the Court of Appeals Building has had a little work done here and there but now it is a full makeover.

“We are long overdue for fire systems, new plumbing, new wiring and other things,” said Chief Judge John Martin, shown in the photo moving office equipment.

The bid to restore the facility is for some $7 million dollars. Work will begin during the month of June. During this time, the 15 judges who sit on rotating panels of three and decide more than 2,000 cases per year will be shifted down Raleigh’s Fayetteville Street one-and-a-half blocks to the old Wachovia building. The Supreme Court made the same move two years ago when their building was renovated. A temporary courtroom has been constructed in the old bank.

Below is all the official information about the move:

Court of Appeals Clerk’s Office: (919) 733-3561.

The N.C. Court of Appeals will be moving to their temporary location at 226 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27601, the week of 2 June, 2008. They expect to be at that location for 15 to 24 months. Their post office address will remain the same, only their physical address will change. Please make a note of it for future court business.

Current Physical Address: 1 West Morgan Street, Raleigh, NC 27601.

New Address as of June 2, 2008: 226 South Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27601

Mailing Address: P.O. Box 2779, Raleigh, North Carolina 27602

Contractors say the project will be turned back over to the state in August of 2009.
