| | | Another successful blood drive 2007 | | | (Raleigh) Once a year the chairs are rolled back and with the permission of Chief Judge John Martin, the North Carolina Court of Appeals Courtroom turns into a clinic. It’s the annual judicial blood drive and another successful year.
Pictured in the photo are Judges John Tyson and Linda Stephens of the North Carolina Court of Appeals, Supreme Court Technical Services Director Bob Northrup and Red Cross Team Leader Lashawnda Freeman. The Red Cross Carolina’s Region is based in Durham and covers Eastern North Carolina. Others donating blood this year included, Judge Martha Geer.
According to Northrup, who organized the event, "We had a very successful blood drive. The Red Cross gave us a goal to collect 25 units of blood. We met and exceeded our goal another year. "
The un-official "champion" blood donor for the local court family is Associate Justice Bob Edmunds of the Supreme Court. Justice Edmund’s record shows he has donated blood at least 43 times in North Carolina and this count does not include when he was a college student or the number of times he donated blood while in the Navy. Edmunds has given more than 5-gallons of his blood over the years to help others.
Here are a few facts about blood donation:
-Every two seconds, someone in the US receives a blood transfusion.
-It is estimated that each unit of blood can save up to 3 people lives.
-While only 5 percent of eligible people actually donate, it is estimated that 95 percent of us will need blood or a blood product during our lifetime. In the Raleigh triangle area, more than 1,500 units of blood are needed each day for patients in local hospitals. (Source: web.redcrossblood.org/portal/NC/facts.htm)
Employees of the Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court participated, donated, volunteered to sign in donors, staff a canteen and keep records.
