| | | AOC employee has secret life | | | (Raleigh) Got a computer problem? Call Charlie. Want to meet a nice guy? Call Charlie. If you work in the Wake County Courthouse or at the AOC Director's Office Charlie will come and fix your computer. He is a quiet man, almost shy, tall, has a collection of beautiful shirts. But, after 5:00 PM he turns into a decorated war hero pilot who will crash land a plane on a small island to fight for survival and save a beautiful girl from the evil forces! You see, Charles Hicks is a published adventure novel writer. His first book has just been printed and will officially hit the stores the second week of July.
Here is how it all got started.
Charles is a native of North Carolina, born on a tobacco farm in Faison, in Duplin County. He graduated high school and like many eastern-Carolina farm boys, joined the military. Charles chose the Air Force and became a radar and radio technician for the Air Traffic Control folks in the airport towers. He was stationed in Florida, California and London, England. Returning home, he worked as an electronics technician for the Museum of History. You know, punch the button and the Civil War map lights up! Later, we were lucky enough to lure Mr. Hicks away and put him to work fixing court computers.
Charles' life took a sudden turn when his wife Susanna became very ill with high blood pressure, kidney failure, dialysis, even a stroke. He had to spend more and more time with her at home tending to her needs and keeping house. To occupy this time, he began writing on his home computer. First, memories of his boyhood on the farm, then things he remembered from 6-years in the military, his travels overseas. Then came the ideas for an adventure thriller. Tall, handsome, much decorated Army helicopter pilot William Horn. His specialty was difficult rescue missions with the chopper that none of the other pilots wanted to try. He soon acquired the nickname "Kook." Kook Horn, home from the war and flying civilian cargo runs. He was offered a deal to fly one last secret mission to India with a "Secret Cargo"... (that's the name of the book.)
With girlfriend Terri on board they fly into danger enroute to India and are forced to crash land on a small island. The secret cargo spills out into the jungle and endangers them. Terri is badly injured. Will Terri survive? Will they live to return to civilization? Will Kook and Terri marry? These are also the secrets of the book and don't ask Charles because he won't tell!
The novel, Secret Cargo, suppose to be available now on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble's website. It should hit the local bookstores July 9th. It is published by the Publish America Company in Baltimore. The author hopes this is the first in a series of Kook Horn adventures... and so do we. Quiet, soft spoken, hard working computer technician Charles Hicks is the real hero here. You just never know! -end- | | | | Publish Date: 06/07/2007 |
