| | | Pre-Law Students Catch A Glimpse Of Their Future | | | A group of pre-law students from Methodist College in Fayetteville visited Raleigh recently to see where their future work may end up.
The college students were invited to come to Raleigh by Court of Appeals Judge John Tyson who is also from Fayetteville. Judge Tyson had spoken to the group earlier in the year about his job and the workings of the appellate court system in Raleigh. Judge Tyson was sitting that day on an Appeals Court panel of three judges, including lead judge James A. Wynn and Judge Linda M. McGee.
The students observed several cases argued before the court then got to meet and question the judges who returned to the courtroom to greet them and pose for pictures.
Judge Wynn explained that there are 15 judges on the Court of Appeals but they hear more than 1,600 cases per year so they have to divide into panels of three to hear all of them. The judges also explained they try to have an opinion within 90-days of the presentations in court. If the three do not agree on the outcome, most of these cases will go up to the Supreme Court to be heard.
Asked what group they remember most who has visited the court, the judges informed them they were hearing a personnel case one day involving the authority of a local Sheriff to hire and fire staff and sixty-five Sheriffs from around the state showed up!
The students then crossed the street to visit and tour the Supreme Court of North Carolina. They saw and heard the history of the courtroom and the highest court in the state.
The pre-law program was started 5 years ago at Methodist College by Wendy Vonnegut, Director of Paralegal Studies. The students will go into law school or other legal related fields of work.
Those visiting Raleigh included, Ashley Glaze, Gina George, David Vargas, Mike Bishop, Tyler Jones, Karla Sears, Denise Cummings and instructor Wendy Vonnegut who is also an attorney and has practiced before the Court of Appeals.
