REMARKS OF

CHIEF JUSTICE BURLEY B. MITCHELL, JR.

TOWN HALL DAY (JUROR APPRECIATION MONTH)

JUNE 18, 1996

THANK YOU ALEX (ALEX ALEXANDER, PRESIDENT OF THE LEAGUEOF MUNICIPALITIES, AND MAYOR PRO TEM OF RED SPRINGS) FORGIVING US THIS OPPORTUNITY TO TELL NORTH CAROLINA’S LOCALLYELECTED OFFICIALS ABOUT OUR PLANS TO RECOGNIZE OUR CITIZENS WHO SERVE ON JURIES.

A TRIAL BY JURY IS PART OF EVERY AMERICAN’S LEGAL BIRTHRIGHT, AS STATED THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES. THE JUDICIAL BRANCH OF GOVERNMENT IS WORKING TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT JURY SERVICE AND TO PRAISE THE MANY CITIZENS WHO HAVE GENEROUSLY SERVED ON JURIES DURING THE PAST YEAR.

WE APPLAUD THE EFFORTS OF OUR CITIZENS WHO SUPPORT THE JUSTICE SYSTEM AND FULFILL THIS IMPORTANT CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS OF NORTH CAROLINA TO PARTICIPATE WHEN CALLED UPON.

AS A SPECIAL SHOW OF APPRECIATION, GOVERNOR HUNT AND I HAVE DESIGNATED THE MONTH OF JULY "JUROR APPRECIATION MONTH." THIS YEAR MARKS THE FIRST ANNUAL OBSERVANCE OF "JUROR APPRECIATION MONTH" IN THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA. WE HAVE SET ASIDE NEXT MONTH AS A SPECIAL TIME FOR THE RECOGNITION OF JURY SERVICE IN AMERICAN LIFE AND WE ARE CALLING UPON ALL CITIZENS, LOCAL GOVERNMENTS, SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES, CLUBS, AND THE NEWS MEDIA TO COMMEMORATE THE ROLE OF JURORS UNDER OUR DEMOCRATIC SYSTEM.

I AM ASKING OUR JUDGES AND OTHER JUDICIAL OFFICIALS TO CONTACT LOCAL OFFICIALS ABOUT RECOGNITION CEREMONIES FOR JURORS AT COUNCIL MEETINGS DURING THE MONTH OF JULY. I AM VERY PLEASED TO BE HERE TODAY TO ENLIST YOUR ASSISTANCE IN THANKING OUR CITIZENS WHO SERVE ON JURIES.

THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO COME HERE TODAY TO KICK-OFF THIS MONTH-LONG CELEBRATION OF ONE ASPECT OF OUR JUDICIAL SYSTEM. I KNOW YOU HAVE A VERY FULL AGENDA TODAY. I APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT AND ASSISTANCE.
