*(This course is a full semester law school offered primarily to law students though it may be open to attorneys and the general public upon request.)
Those interested in mediation training should contact trainers directly to learn about training dates, times, locations, and fees. Anyone interested in becoming certified to provide the 40-hour course should contact the Commission's office.
An applicant seeking to be certified as a superior court mediator by the Dispute Resolution Commission may be able to receive partial credit toward the 40-hour course required by Rule 8.A. for training received in other States and not approved by the Commission or training conducted in North Carolina by a trainer not certified by the Commission. Such training must cover the majority of the curriculum set forth in Mediated Settlement Conference Rule 9 and reflect an approach to mediation that is similar to that which has evolved in North Carolina, i.e., cases are court-ordered; attorneys participate in the sessions; there is use of caucusing; and the mediator serves as case manager. Such an approach must be reflected in the course demonstration and role-play opportunities. Those interested in obtaining partial credit for courses taken should contact the Commission's office. Partial credit cannot be given for victim-offender, EEOC, arbitration, postal service, or other training that does not mirror the context or practice of North Carolina's Mediated Settlement Conference Program.
