Deferred from Jury Service

The Court realizes that prospective jurors may be summoned at an inconvenient time and is willing to postpone service to a more convenient time in most instances. A person wishing to be deferred to a later date may call (252) 695-7270 during business hours at least 10 days before the scheduled service. Work, vacation, school, childcare, eldercare and family obligations are often reasons that jury service may be postponed to a later time, but are not reasons for jury service to be excused entirely. (See Excused from Jury Service for reasons jurors may be excused.)

Anyone requesting a deferment will be sent a notice of the new date for jury service. In most cases, a new jury summons will be issued to that person if the date of deferment is greater than 10 weeks.
