Excused from Jury Service
 
A prospective juror may be excused from jury service if that person:
  • Is 72 years of age or older. Follow the directions on your summons that tells how to request such an excuse in writing.
  • Has a medical, mental or physical disability. Doctor's verification must be provided, on letterhead or a prescription pad signed by the doctor that details why this person cannot serve and the length or duration of the illness or problem.
  • Provides actual and necessary care of a person and actual and necessary care of another.
Requests to be excused from jury service should be clearly explained, and medical records or a doctor's statement may be attached when appropriate. The request should be made in writing and received by the Court at least a week prior to the date of scheduled service. A District Court Judge will review and rule on the petition and the results of the judge's consideration will be mailed to the person making the request. Emergency requests may be made to the trial judge shortly after reporting for jury service.
