Drug Treatment Court in New Hanover County

This is a program for drug addicts that is law enforcement driven. Drug dealers are not admitted. Violent offenders or defendants that had a weapon in their possession at the time of arrest are not admitted. Law enforcement recommends candidates to ADA. If they qualify after being screened they are admitted to the year long program. The defendant pleads guilty in District Court and is placed on probation. Every two weeks they appear in District Court from 8:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. before the same judge. Their progress in treatment is monitored. If they violate the terms of the agreement with the judge sanctions are imposed. All defendants remain in court for the entire session.
