District Court Judge Amanda L. Maris

Judge Maris grew up in Columbia, South Carolina. She attended Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, graduating in 2000 with a B.A. in Communications. In 2006, she received her law degree from North Carolina Central University School of Law.

Upon graduation, Maris worked in private practice before joining the Public Defender's Office in Durham in January 2007. As an Assistant Public Defender, she also volunteered in North Carolina's first Misdemeanor Diversion Program that gives young people a chance to avoid a criminal record. In 2009, she co-founded an expunction clinic in Durham with Legal Aid of North Carolina. Maris also served as an adjunct professor at North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2015-2016.

Judge Maris was appointed by Governor Roy Cooper and took the bench in August 2017. She values her community deeply and is a board member of two organizations that support youth in Durham: The Durham County Teen Court and Restitution Program and Rebound - Alternatives for Youth.

When not presiding in court, Judge Maris stays active by running after her highly-energized son.
