The Clerk of Superior Court is elected for four years and must be a resident of the county in which he or she is elected. Unlike clerks of court in other states, the Clerk of Superior Court in North Carolina has numerous judicial functions.
The elected Chatham County Clerk of Court is David Samuel Cooper
. He and some 14 staff members are responsible for all clerical and record keeping functions of the General Courts of Justice. His staff is spread throughout the courthouse annex and is organized according to their function and duties.

- Decedent's Estates: Periodic inventories and the accountings necessary to administer the estates of deceased persons are filed, and appropriate forms obtained, from Clerk of Court. Estate-related business is conducted and all estate-related records are maintained at the Clerk of Court's Office,40 E Chatham Street, Chatham County Justice Center, Pittsboro. This office is also where wills are probated. It is a good idea to contact this office before making an official visit in order to insure that all of the required documentation is available.
- Special Proceedings: Certain types of cases, designated "special proceedings," are filed and administered by the Clerk of Court's office. These cases include foreclosure proceedings, name changes, adoptions, incompetency proceedings, and partition proceedings. In these cases, the Clerk of Court or an Assistant Clerk of Court is considered a judicial official and will preside over the hearing. - Traffic Citations: Payments for traffic citations are made at Clerk of Court's Office at 40 E Chatham Street, Chatham County Justice Center, Pittsboro, NC 27312. If you are eligible to pay your ticket by mail and desire to do so, you should follow the directions on your citation and forward the appropriate documents and necessary funds (certified check or money order) to District Criminal Court, P.O. Box 369, Pittsboro, NC 27312. As with any court case, you should make sure you understand the consequences of paying your citation before doing so.
