Chatham County Jury Service

Length of Service

Jury service in Chatham County operates on the one-day / one-trial system. Prospective jurors are summoned for a specific day of the week and, if selected to serve on a jury, will serve for that day or for the duration of that trial, whichever is longer. Jurors can serve on more than one jury trial. For example, if a person is selected on a jury trial on their first day of service and the trial is completed early in the morning that person will be eligible for selection on another jury trial. Anyone not selected, or not in the process of selection, will be excused at the end of the day. The one-day / one-trial system allows jurors to fulfill their service obligation and return to their normal routines as quickly as possible.

Hours of Service

The typical juror's day will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Occasionally, other hours are required by the court during trial, but this is rare.

When and Where to Report

Jurors must call the Jury Clerk's Office telephone message number at (919) 545-3505 after 5:00 p.m. the evening before they are to report for jury service to listen to a recorded message indicating which jurors are to report and at what time.

Jurors should report on the day and time indicated on the jury summons and / or call after 5 p.m. on the day before jury service is to begin to receive updated reporting information.

If instructed to do so, jurors should report to the Jury Assembly Room located on the 3rd floor of the Chatham County Justice Center.
