Judges who preside in family court undergo specialized training. In the family court model, all legal issues involving a family are consolidated as much as possible and heard by the same judge to reduce the number of hearings. Once a case has been assigned to a judge, that judge will hear all related matters until it is completely resolved and the judge often remains involved in all further litigation involving the same family. Judge conducts hearings, trials and selected conferences, enters court orders, orders or refers litigants to mediation, arbitration or other court and community resources for treatment or assistance.
In District 25, the following judges preside in family court:
- Robert M. Brady, Chief
- Gregory R. Hayes
- L. Suzanne Owsley
- C. Thomas Edwards
- Burford A. Cherry
- Sherri Wilson Elliott
- J. Gary Dellinger
- Robert A. Mullinax
Please note: communication with a judge by one party only (also known as "ex parte" communication) is not permitted. Judicial support staff in the District Court Judges' Office (phone 828-328-5521) can provide limited information.
