Filing a Domestic Violence Protective Order
 
  1. Obtain the forms listed under Requesting a Domestic Violence Protective Order from the Clerk of Court's Office.
  2. Complete the forms.
  3. Present the completed forms to the Clerk of Court for filing.
  4. Following the filing, the Clerk of Court will provide copies for the Plaintiff and copies to be served on the Defendant.
  5. Take the copies to be served on the Defendant to the County Sheriff's Office (either the County where the forms are being filed or the County in which the Defendant lives if different from where the forms are being filed). The copies can be hand delivered or mailed to the County Sheriff's Office. It is recommended that if the forms are mail, that they sent using Overnight or Registered mail.
  6. Plaintiff should keep copies of the temporary order in easily accessible places, and also in locations where they may be needed (e.g. Plaintiff's car, workplace, on Plaintiff's person, and in locations noted on the order -- daycare, family members homes, etc.).
