Criminal Background Checks

If you would like a certified copy of an individual's criminal record, you may contact the Clerk of Superior Court's Office within the county for a search of records within that county. The request for a certified search is made on Form AOC-CR-314; the fee is $25.00. An individual may obtain his or her own criminal record either from the clerk or, for a statewide search, from the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI), with submission of a fingerprint card and payment of a fee — see "Reviewing Your Criminal History Record" on the SBI website.

Members of the public can use public access terminals in the clerk's office to search and view criminal records without charge. However, such searches are not certified, and there may be a charge for printing.

If you are interested in obtaining criminal and civil information regularly from the North Carolina Administrative Office of the Courts (NCAOC), or would like the convenience of accessing the information from your office, you may obtain cost and connectivity information by contacting the NCAOC Remote Public Access team at 919-890-2220 or via email at rpa@nccourts.org.

Individual unofficial record checks may be conducted through several companies that will sell information to you. Each company has its own set charges. The NCAOC lists on its website companies that obtain information from the NCAOC on an ongoing basis pursuant to a licensing agreement. The records that the NCAOC provides to the companies are accurate reflections of the data in the clerks' databases, but the NCAOC cannot guarantee that the information the companies provide to their customers is current or accurate. Click for a list of companies that have asked to be listed on the NCAOC website.
