The
Directory of Certified Court Interpreters of Spanish contains the names of certified Spanish court interpreters working in North Carolina.
North Carolina's court interpreter certification program currently offers rigorous court interpreter examinations for Spanish only. We hope to add other languages in the future. The term certified court interpreter is used in North Carolina to refer to a spoken-language interpreter who, through a testing procedure, is deemed competent to interpret from English into a foreign language and from the foreign language into English
A court interpreter of a language for which there is no certification examination is listed separately as non-certified and the AOC cannot endorse this individual's qualifications. We include this list of non-certified interpreters as a service to court officials who may need an interpreter for a language other than Spanish.
Contained in the directory are: (1) the list of certified individuals who recently passed the required Spanish exam and (2) the list of uncertified interpreters for languages other than Spanish. Information contained in theses lists will be updated monthly on our web site and yearly in hard copy. If you are unsure of an interpreter's status, please e-mail
Courtney.J.Lyman@nccourts.org .
Spanish interpreters are certified and entered in our directory after (1) passing the required examination developed by the State Court Interpreter Certification Consortium or by the Federal Court Interpreter Certification Examination program, (2) attending any orientation or training sessions that the AOC may require, (3) demonstrating good character and fitness, (4) agreeing in writing to abide by the court system's foreign language interpreting guidelines, including the Code of Ethical Conduct for Court Interpreters, and (5) paying any application fee, training fee, or examination fee charged by AOC. The final decision of whether or not to certify a particular applicant rests with the AOC Director.
