As North Carolina's population becomes more diverse, the need for quality court interpretation in Spanish and several other languages continues to grow. The large increase in the Limited English Proficient (LEP) population and the shortage of qualified interpreters creates problems for our courts for which there are no easy answers. The lack of understanding of the skills required of court interpreters and the shortage of qualified interpreters jeopardizes access to justice and causes court costs to increase due to appeals for faulty interpretation. Interpreters are not qualified simply because they are bilingual. Qualified interpreters have excellent command of both languages and legal terminology; as well as good memory and note taking skills.
