The Family Financial Settlement Program creates a settlement opportunity for parties and their attorneys who might otherwise fight a protracted court battle over issues of property division, child support or alimony. Parties referred to the program will participate in mediation or another dispute resolution alternative such as early neutral evaluation. During mediation, the most commonly used procedure, the parties and their attorneys will sit down with a mediator to discuss and attempt to resolve the issues in dispute. If they are successful, the parties will settle their dispute on their own terms. They will also eliminate the need for their litigation to drag on or to result in a costly and often bitterly-fought trial.
